Allow xg home edition run on SG Hardware
What we will do:
Allow XG software installer to run on XG hardware appliances, after removing current partitions (same option as UTM9)
What we are not planning:
We will not allow software install to run trivially on a system currently installed with XG.
We will not make any effort to support on-system wireless, on software installs.
The system will not report itself in any way as an XG appliance, inside the OS.

Im bought some SG105 Rev2 Hardware. Give it a memory update. So know i tried to install XG Home Edition 17.5xx no problem, install success with hardware edition download. But i have no chance to register it for private use... what a mess..
Our Free Home Use XG Firewall is a fully equipped software version of the Sophos XG firewall, available at no cost for home users – no strings attached.
That‘s what Sophos promised, but they do striped down the Software Installer.
I checked it with a Hardware installer on an Virtual Box Machine. I get the WifI components installed. But Virtual Box hasn‘t the drivers for the NIC‘s.

It's already possible to use the softwarr installer to install Sophos XG Home on XG and SG Appliances.
I'm running Sophos XG on a XG115 Rev2 at home without any issues.
This is so stupid. Many people would like to buy a sophos hardware (for home or testing use) but sophos itself puts stones in the way. Managers in other companies would be fired...
Has there been any progress on this, I have a XG105 I would like to use at home.
@Sophos: Thank you for nothing!
Does this work yet?
any news on this?
Can we please have an update on this? Thousands of home users around the world are waiting on movement on this.
How can we message Alan to get his attention back on this for an update?
any update on this, just want to know if the SG125 i just bought was a waste or if i should try resell
Could you please confirm
a) you will allow sophos home licenese on an SG appliance?
b) an approximate ETA?
Totally agree, I am really wanting to protect my home with the XG Home edition, and have found an SG125 cheap, id rather run it on Sophos appliance rather than a power hungry PC sitting in the corner
please sophos, allow this to occur
Is there any update on this? I have an XG85 and would really like to be able to install home edition. The 85 seems like the perfect unit for a home user, I'm surprised I can't run home edition.
Any planned support for the XG85? I recently purchased one thinking it would work to find out it wont. Now I'm kind of out of luck. In reading this and other posts, I thought it was possible.
I posted my issue here:
Jeffrey - Thanks so much. I've had another go after your post and this time used your method (I used gparted last time and can only guess that I didn't delete the partitions properly)
Just to confirm for anyone, mine is an XG125 with SW-SFOS_16.01.1-202.iso and all is working a treat.
SW-SFOS_16.01.1-202.iso worked fine for me on an SG210. I actually booted from a windows install USB so i could clear the disk (opened a cmd prompt during install and ran diskpart... clean) first. Made the v16 USB using rufus and it booted fine and installation went without a hitch. Entered the Home serial, picked 30 day trial and it activated fine. When i go to license details it shows the features working until 2099. Things look good to me.
Now tried with SW-SFOS_16.01.1-202.iso and still nothing doing. Wiped all the partitions that I could see (/dev/sda /dev/sdb) but made no difference. In fact the web admin console was still accessible!
Re-insalled with HW-SFOS_16.01.1-202.iso no problem.
Alan, is it possible to give any indication of when this might be implemented, please?
Looks like SW-SFOS_15.01.0-376.iso is needed to get this to work on SG hardware. Where can we get older versions now that Sophos has removed them from their FTP site?
I too have made the mistake of buying Sophos hardware (XG125) without reading up properly, as I thought "What better to run the home edition on?" I'm quite a noob with this stuff but thanks to everyone here have pieced together what to do (I think).I've just written SW-SFOS_15.01.0_MR-3-447.ISO to a USB stick and tried to install it. I get an error "Detected Sophos Physical Device. Please get proper installation source."
So I guess either the relaxation of restrictions hasn't happened yet or I'm doing something wrong.
Alan, I didn't remove any partitions before the install. Doesn't the install wipe everything, or is there something that has to be done manually before the install is started?
I would add that I think it's incredibly kind of Sophos to allow a home use license but then strange to limit the use on their hardware.
